California bill proposes retail workers should earn double on Thanksgiving

SAN DIEGO — Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez is trying to make major retailers pay their workers double-time wages when they scheduled staff to suit up over the Thanksgiving holiday.

While most families get to spend the days off with each other and create hallmark memories, many retail workers are practically reeled into work to take on the craziness of Black Friday, and Grey Thursday. Retail employers aren't required to compensate their staff with holiday pay rates, creating no beneficial incentives for people to work on Thanksgiving.

Gonzalez says many retail workers are afraid of what might happen if they don't work the holiday. She claims some of these employers threaten to fire staff who consider taking Thanksgiving off. If Gonzalez's bill gets passed, retailers with at least 500 employees and at least 10 stores in the state will be required to pay their staff double-time wages if they clock into work on Thanksgiving.

Notable major companies that would be forced to comply with the holiday wage increase are Target, Macy's, Best Buy, Toys R Us, and Wal-Mart, all of whom have increased staffing hours over the past few years to compete with online sales.
