HONG KONG — After being crowned Miss World Canada in May, Anastasia Lin made headlines for speaking out against the Chinese communist party for its human rights violations against Falun Gong practitioners. As it turns out, her voice may have cost her the global crown.

On November 26 at Hong Kong Airport, Lin, 25, was on her way to Hainan to compete in the Miss World beauty pageant, but was met with resistance when told she wouldn’t be granted a visa upon her arrival in China.

The Chinese organizers of the Miss World pageant did not send Lin an invitation, unlike every other Miss World contestant. But as a Canadian citizen, Lin figured she would go anyways, as she’s legally allowed a visa upon landing in China. This method also proved to be futile, and Lin was unable to board her flight to Sanya.

Peacefully outraged, the freedom-fighting beauty queen took to Twitter to tell the world of her situation, and that China is afraid of a beauty queen.

While she won’t compete in the Miss World pageant this year, the plight of the Falun Gong practitioners she fights is even more likely to reach the ears of the world.
