2015 may be hottest year on record due to climate change and El Niño

UNITED NATIONS — Days before international climate talks will take place in Paris, a United Nations agency has announced that climate change is to blame for extreme weather this year, and temperatures have reached record-breaking highs.
The World Meteorological Organization reports that the global temperature in 2015 is 0.73 degrees higher than the 1961 to 1999 average, and warmer by 1 degree compared to 1880 to 1889, making it likely to be the hottest year on record.
The rise in temperature is largely due to global warming, with waters heating up as they absorb up to 90% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere.
This year's strong El Niño phenomenon is likewise heating up the climate, with waters in the Pacific getting warmer, in turn increasing air temperature.
Both Asia and South America are having their hottest year on record, while Africa and Europe are experiencing their second hottest. The trend is expected to continue in 2016, when the impact of El Niño will be most strongly felt.
WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud has said this is all bad news for the planet. World leaders are expected to discuss measures to combat the Earth's rapidly warming weather at next week's climate summit.
