Moscow confirms the downed SU-24 jet is theirs but denies it was in Turkish airspace

Moscow has confirmed one of its SU-24 planes has been shot down by Turkish jets. Turkish media sources said the jet had violated its air space on the border with Syria – a claim denied by the Russian ministry of defence who say its aircraft was in Syria.

Turkish military officials said the action was taken after the pilots had been warned 10 times in the space of five minutes that they were in its airspace.

The incident happened in Latakia province in the Bayer Bucak area which it’s believed the Russian planes had targeted just before.

Turkish media report eye witnesses saying the two pilots were seen landing with parachutes. Syrian activists claim one of the pilots was captured. Russian helicopters have apparently mounted a search for the other one.
