Researchers have discovered ancient fossil forests on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard that are believed to have contributed to a massive drop in carbon levels hundreds of millions of years ago.

The remnants of ancient forests have been discovered in the Svalbard archipelago amidst the Arctic Ocean.

Researchers believe the forests helped paved the way for a large scale decrease in carbon levels hundreds of millions of years ago.
