Heroic Tulane medical student shot after trying to stop mugging

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA — Authorities are looking for a man who shot a Tulane University medical student who was trying to stop a mugging.
Peter Gold, a fourth-year Tulane Medical School student, was driving on Magazine Street around 4 a.m. Friday when he saw a woman being dragged against her will to a nearby SUV on St. Mary Street.
Gold backed up and turned against traffic on St. Mary and pulled up next to the woman, who was lying on the sidewalk, and rushed to her aid with his cellphone in hand.
As he kneeled down next to her, the man who was carrying her moments before got out of an SUV with a semi-automatic gun and aimed it at Gold's face.
The suspect allegedly demanded money from Gold. Gold tried to tell the man he did not have any money numerous times, according to police.
The suspect then lowered the weapon and shot Gold in the stomach.
The suspect then attempted to shoot Gold in the head three times, but the gun jammed each time.
The suspect finally gave up, turned around and grabbed the woman's purse, jumped into his vehicle and drove off.
Gold was rushed to the hospital where he is listed in guarded condition. He is expected to make a full recovery. The woman was not injured.
Tulane University is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest and indictment of the shooter.
