PARIS — A suicide bomber who attacked the area surrounding France's national sports stadium amid a wave of terror attacks in the nation's capital on Friday night was prevented from entering the stadium by the venue's security guards, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The first of three suicide bombers who targeted Paris' Stade de France reportedly had a ticket to attend an exhibition football game taking place between France and Germany.

Security guards reportedly frisked the attacker 15 minutes into the match and discovered he was wearing a vest loaded with explosives and bolts, according to the report which cited a separate on-duty guard identified only by his first name, Zouheir.

After backing away, the suicide attacker detonated the device, taking his own life.

Authorities believe the bomber's aim was to detonate inside the 80,000-person venue in an attempt to cause a deadly stampede.

The Islamic State has since claimed responsibility for the string of horrific shootings and bombings across Paris, which took the lives of more than 120 people and injured scores more.

French President Francois Hollande has vowed "merciless" revenge against those responsible for horrific rampage, which represents the worst string of violence the country has seen since the end of the Second World War.
