Colombia: 30 Years Since Town of Armero Buried by Mudslide

Thirty years ago today 30,000 people who lived in the town of Armero were killed when their town was buried by a mudslide caused by an explosion of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. Even though residents had warned the government of Belisario Betancour to take action, nothing was done to protect them. Today the victims of the tragedy and their children are being honored with film screenings and musical events. The state governor said that the eruption served as a wake-up call, but that Colombia has a long way to go in developing risk management strategies. Natalia Margarita reports from Bogota for teleSUR.
