Justin Drew Bieber (/ˈbiːbər/; born March 1, 1994)[3][4] is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Bieber released his debut EP, My World, in late 2009. It has been certified platinum in the United States. He became the first artist to have seven songs from a debut record to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.[5] Bieber released his first full-length studio album, My World 2.0, in 2010. It debuted at or near number one in several countries and was certified platinum in the United States. It was preceded by the single, "Baby", which is also, as of 2015, the YouTube video with the most dislikes.[6] He followed up the release of his debut album with his first headlining tour, the My World Tour, the remix album titled, My Worlds Acoustic, and Never Say Never – The Remixes, and the 3D biopic-concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Bieber released his second studio album, Under the Mistletoe, in November 2011, when it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Bieber released his third studio album, Believe, in 2012. Bieber's fourth studio album Purpose is scheduled to be released in November 2015.

Bieber debuted the track "What Do You Mean?", during the MTV Video Music Awards on August 30, 2015.[8] This was followed by a number of other televised performances, including The X Factor, The Today Show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and the 2015's Think it Up telecast. On October 16, 2015, Purpose was made available to pre-order. A remixed version of "What Do You Mean?" with additional vocals from Ariana Grande will be made available to those who pre-order the album on iTunes.[9]

Purpose was initially banned in various Middle Eastern countries and Indonesia due to the cover art's heavy Christian references, most prominently Bieber's cross tattoo and his praying stance, which were deemed "too provocative".[10] An alternate cover was issued for these countries, depicting Bieber atop a cliff, looking out over a shore.

On October 28, 2015, Bieber announced the album track listing through a series of tweets that displayed each title graffitied on a wall in various countries.[11]

Bieber announced the first leg of his world tour on November 11, 2015.
Bieber was born on March 1, 1994, in London, Ontario, at St Joseph's Hospital,[10] and was raised in Stratford, Ontario.[11] He is the only child of Jeremy Jack Bieber and Patricia "Pattie" Mallette. Bieber's parents were never married.[12] Pattie raised her son with the help of her mother, Diane, and stepfather, Bruce.[13] His mother is of French-Canadian descent; his paternal great-grandfather was of German ancestry, and his other roots are English and Irish.[14][15][16] He has also stated that he believes that he has some undetermined Aboriginal Canadian ancestry.[17]

Through Jeremy, Bieber has two younger half-siblings, Jazmyn (born 2009) and Jaxon (born 2010).[18] Pattie worked a series of low-paying office jobs, raising Bieber as a single mother in low-income housing. Bieber has maintained contact with his father.[19]

Bieber attended a French-language immersion elementary school in Stratford, the Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School.[13] Growing up, he learned to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet.[11][20] He graduated from high school in Stratford, Ontario, the St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in 2012[21] with a 4,0 GPA.[22] In early 2007, aged 12, Bieber sang Ne-Yo's "So Sick" for a local singing competition in Stratford and was placed second.[20][23] Mallette posted a video of the performance on YouTube for their family and friends to see. She continued to upload videos of Bieber singing covers of various R&B songs, and Bieber's popularity on the site grew.
While searching for videos of a different singer, Scooter Braun, a former marketing executive of So So Def, clicked on one of Bieber's 2007 videos by accident.[19] Impressed, Braun tracked down the theatre Bieber was performing in, located Bieber's school, and finally contacted Mallette, who was reluctant because of Braun's Judaism. She remembered praying, "God, I gave him to you. You could send me a Christian man, a Christian label!" and "God, you don't want this Jewish kid to be Justin's man, do you?" However, church elders convinced her to let Bieber go with Braun. At 13, Bieber went to Atlanta, Georgia, with Braun to record demo tapes.[19] Bieber began singing for Usher one week later.[25]

Bieber was soon signed to Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG), a joint venture between Braun and Usher.[26] Justin Timberlake was also reportedly in the running to sign Bieber, but lost the bidding war to Usher.[26][27] Usher then sought assistance in finding a label home for the artist from then manager Chris Hicks, who helped engineer an audition with his contact L.A. Reid of The Island Def Jam Music Group.[28] Reid signed Bieber to Island Records in October 2008 (resulting in a joint venture between RBMG and Island Records) and appointed Hicks as executive Vice-President of Def Jam where he would be able
