Brazil: Mine Owners BHP and Vale Responsible for Mudslide Devastation
  • 8 years ago
The search continues for victims of last Thursday’s mudslides caused by the bursting of two mine dams near the town of Mariana in the state of Minas Gerais. Mayor Duarte Junior says he will demand financial compensation, not only from the operator Samarco, but also from the Anglo-Australian company BHP and Vale, of Brazil. The mining waste continues to flow 400 kilometers down the Doce River, destroying agricultural land and polluting water supplies. State health officials are warning people who come into contact with the mud to throw away their clothes. Biologists say the damage may be permanent. teleSUR
