Woman jailed for posting diaper dog photos online to report animal cruelty

HOUSTON — Heart-breaking photos of a six-month-old Labrador-German shepherd mixed puppy named June landed a woman in a county jail for at least 14 hours.
Two weeks ago, Amber Cammack caught a glimpse of the "porch pooch," as June is now being referred to online, looking sad and depressed and wearing a diaper. Having seen the dog sitting out on the balcony of a neighbor's condominium for several days, Cammack decided to call for help. She contacted several government agencies, including the local sheriff's department, but says she received no useful response.
Going the online social justice route, Cammack posted photos of the porch pooch all over Facebook and YouTube in an effort to get the public's attention. Her citizen journalism earned her a call from the local sheriff, who told her she was harassing the dog's so-called care-takers and asked her to take the photos down.
Cammack refused, and was hit with misdemeanor charges of repeated electronic harassment. As a result of the charges, she was arrested and kept in the Harris County Sheriff's Department jail cell for more than half a day without visitation rights.
Cammack, has since been released and had the charges against her dropped. She has since generated a massive wave of support from animal welfare activists, and says while she was under arrest she wore her handcuffs "with pride."
Meanwhile, June the puppy, who was apparently being "taken care of" by her owner's friend while they were out of town, is reportedly now in the hands of her actual owner.
