Hero dog helps family rescue 82-year-old, Russian grandma lost in the woods

EAST AURORA, NEW YORK — Over the past two years, 82-year-old Rimma Bulatova taught her family's dog to understand commands in Russian—her native tongue. On the night of Thursday, October 29, the dog's ability to comprehend her ended up saving Bulatova's life.

Raia, an obedient gray bearded collie mix, knew just what to do when she and Bulatova got lost in the woods during a wild rainstorm. Out on their daily walk, the two headed down Sweet Road at around 4 p.m. But when winds picked up and rain began to pour, Bulatova found herself disoriented and unable to figure out the way back through the forest.

After they'd been gone for two hours and the sun had set, Bulatova told Raia to "go home" in Russian. Raia listened and waited outside on the porch of her family's house until the family saw her waiting in the rain and knew something was wrong.

The family quickly called police at 7:15 p.m. and asked for their help in rescuing Bulatova. Rescuers found Bulatova around 9:30 p.m., soaked and shivering in a muddy and heavily-wooded area about a mile and a half away from home.

When they found her, Bulatova whispered using the little English she knew, "Russian woman is strong." The hero dog Raia, who the family rescued seven years earlier from a shelter, is being heralded for returning the favour.
