Black American dude applies for refugee status in Canada because of US cops

VANCOUVER — An African-American man has applied for refugee status in Canada citing police harassment in the United States, CBC reported.

A hearing was held at Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board in Vancouver on October 23, where Kyle Canty, 30, pled his case. According to CBC, Canty presented video recordings of several encounters he's had with police in the United States and cited several high profile cases of police brutality as evidence of the threat he faces as a black man in America.

After living in six different states and racking up a variety of what he claims are false charges like jaywalking, resisting arrest, and trespassing, Canty decided to visit Vancouver, where he has been living in a homeless shelter, the New York Daily News reported.

Canty is quoted as telling the IRB hearing, "I got bothered because I'm black. This is a history of false arrest. My name is ruined because of the false arrest." But in Canada, he said he feels safe and comfortable talking to police.

If he's granted refugee status that he wants to open a martial arts studio and start a photography business, CBC reported. The IRB in Canada usually only allows ten U.S. citizens to get asylum each year.
