Adrift for more than a month, four fishermen rescued off the coast of Mexico

CHIAPAS, MEXICO — The Mexican navy rescued four fishermen who have been adrift at sea for more than a month after their small fishing boat ran out of fuel.

The four fishermen—two Colombians and two Ecuadorians—were rescued on Saturday following a month of being adrift. Their boat was discovered by a Mexican navy aircraft 260 kilometres from Chiapas, a state in southern Mexico.

The four had set sail for a fishing trip from the Ecuadorian port of Esmeralda on September 24, but their boat ran out of fuel on October 1. Ocean currents then gradually pushed the fishing boat northwards towards Mexico.

According to Agence France-Presse, rescuers said that all four men were dehydrated but they have no other health problems. It's not clear what they survived on while adrift.
