New Jersey cop blames date-rape drug for fatal Staten Island car crash

NEW YORK — A New Jersey cop facing homicide charges for a fatal Staten Island car crash in March said a date-rape drug may have impaired his mental capacity on the night of the accident.

The Staten Island Advance reports that in a hearing on Thursday, Pedro Abad's lawyer claimed that a stripper may have slipped GHB into his client's drink prior to the accident, saying it's a common practice in strip clubs to get customers to spend more money.

Around 4:50 a.m. on March 20, Abad and three other friends left Curves strip club in Staten Island in a Honda Civic, with Abad behind the wheel. The car headed north in the southbound lane of the West Shore Expressway, eventually crashing into a trailer-truck. Two passengers were killed — Officer Frank Viggiano and Joseph Rodriguez, while Abad and another officer, Patrick Kudlac, were critically injured, according to the New York Times.

Tests later showed Abad's blood alcohol level at the time was three times higher than the legal limit, though further test needs to be done to verify the GHB claim.

The strip club has denied the GHB allegations, citing Abad's previous drunk driving arrests, including one in 2011 where he crashed his car into the side of a building housing a grocery in Roselle, New Jersey; and another some thirteen months later, when a police dashboard camera recorded his attempt to complete a sobriety test and subsequent arrest in Rahway, New Jersey, reports The Daily Mail.
