SAVANNAH, GEORGIA — Two Georgia sheriff's deputies and a healthcare worker have been indicted for the homicide of a college student who died while in police custody on the morning of January 2, according to NBC.

Matthew Ajibade, 22, was arrested on January 1 and taken to Chatham County Jail, where surveillance footage shows him fighting with officers and getting beaten up for resisting. His arrest happened after a domestic disturbance call, and he was charged with domestic violence, battery, and obstruction of an officer, CNN reported. Ajibade's family told NBC he was suffering from a mental health episode.

When police responded to the call, they found that Ajibade's girlfriend had a broken nose and bruised face. She explained that Ajibade had bipolar disorder. During the violent encounter with police, he allegedly broke a deputy's nose before being restrained.

Once in police custody, Deputy Jason Kenny reportedly tased Ajibade while he was restrained. Ajibade was then taken to a holding cell, where he spent several hours before he was found dead from a variety of injuries. According to the autopsy, Ajibade died from "blunt force trauma ... a combination of abrasions, lacerations, skin injuries about the head and some other areas of the body." The 22-year-old college student was found dead in his cell early on the morning of January 2.

Nine officers were fired following the incident, and two have been indicted. Deputy Maxine Evans was charged with falsifying a restraint chair log, which details what time an inmate gets checked on, along with involuntary manslaughter. Deputy Kenny was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, along with aggravated assault and cruelty to an inmate for tasing Ajibade while he was restrained. Healthcare worker Gregory Brown was charged with involuntary manslaughter and public record fraud in connection with the case.
