Lost hunter survives six days in the blazing Australian desert by eating ants

LAVERTON, AUSTRALIA — A 62-year-old recreational hunter in Australia defied all odds after he survived six days in the blazing heat of the Australian outback with no water and pretty much no food—except for the insects he ended up living on.

Reg Foggerdy was last seen on October 7 when he and his brother Ray drove from their camp in Australia's Great Victoria Desert to an even more remote desert area in order to hunt feral camels. On their way back to camp that afternoon, Foggerdy left the car his brother was driving to pursue a camel on foot when he lost contact with Ray. Foggerdy only had on shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops when he went missing.

Six days after his disappearance, police tracked Foggerdy to a tree 15 kilometres from where his brother last saw him. He had been living underneath the tree for two days surviving on black ants, which the police say are what sustained him for so long.

With the desert's temperature reaching as high as 37 degrees Celsius, police say that it was a "miracle" that Foggerdy survived as long as he did without food and water.

Foggerdy's wife Erlyn, who cried when she heard that he was found, told the Adelaide Advertiser that her husband survived thanks to the jungle survival shows he likes to watch on television.
