Mexico: Insecurity Fears Drive Private Security Industry

Mexico's alarmingly high homicide rate and the wave of robberies and kidnappings coupled with authorities' inability to control violent crime and a 98% impunity rate, have fueled the growth of the private security industry. The industry, which fills the void in public security, is worth US$240 billion. Mexico currently has 367,000 police, but 450,000 registered private security officers. Public security, rather than being a right, is increasing available only to those willing and able to pay. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City. teleSUR
