Meet the Woman Who’s Singlehandedly Solving Peru’s Trash Problem | PepsiCo

Albina Ruiz lived in an area of Lima, Peru, known as El Cono Norte, where she was studying to become an industrial engineer. Despite the classic beautiful images of Peru one might expect, El Cono Norte was littered with waste. Municipal authorities were only able to process about half the community’s recycling and trash, leaving the other half in the hands of residents who didn’t know what to do with it. Their solution was to simply dump it wherever they saw fit – be it in the streets or in the river. Ruiz decided it was her mission to change that.
