HERNDON, VIRGINIA-- Authorities are trying to identify a man who set himself on fire at a gas station in Virginia's Fairfax County.

WJLA reports that around 3p.m. on Monday, a man in his 50s went to a Sunoco gas station on Centreville Road in Herndon, Virginia. The man reportedly bought 56 cents worth of gas and put it in a plastic container. He then walked to the back of the gas station, where he doused his body with gasoline and set himself on fire.

Bystanders at the scene say they tried to put the flames out by dousing the man with water, but were unsuccessful, reports The Washington Post. According to Anthony Barrero, Deputy Fire Marshal for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, the man was unconscious when they arrived. He was flown by helicopter to Medstar Washington Hospital Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, reports the Fairfax County Times.

The man was found to have significant second and third degree burns over all of his body. Officials do not know why he set himself on fire, but an investigation by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department is currently underway, according to CBSDC.
