SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA-- A Sacramento police officer was attacked by one suspect, while another recorded the incident and encouraged the beating, CBS Sacramento reported.

According to Crime Voice, Juan Gomez, 21, approached a police car and concocted a story about an armed man in the area. Police sergeant Doug Morse told Capital Public Radio: "Moments after that officer stepped out of the car, that individual struck the officer in the face. The officer fell to the ground and the assault continued when the suspect actually jumped onto the officer as he was on the ground and continued to strike him in the face."

Then, Jamaral Lee, 35, recorded the beating and cheered on Gomez, who punched the officer in the face before trying to steal his gun, CBS Sacramento reported. Two nearby security guards ran to the officer's rescue and pulled Gomez off of him so the officer could radio for help.

"It was definitely a courageous act of those security guards because it's my understanding they rushed to his aid and that was undoubtedly a tipping point in the fight where the officer was able to regain some control," Morse told Capital Public Radio.

Gomez was arrested and charged with multiple offenses including battery on a police officer, assault and resisting arrest. Lee was also arrested and charged with advocating injury on a police officer and assault and battery on a police officer. The victim of the attack, a two-year veteran of the force, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries to his face, Crime Voice reported. He is expected to return to work soon, according to Capital Public Radio.
