Airbus wants to 'stack' flyers on top of one another, sadistic new patent filing shows

TOULOUSE, FRANCE ? French airplane maker Airbus has filed patents in Europe and the United States for split-level seating passenger configurations ? an idea which has been likened to stacking passengers like blocks.

In the document, published with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on October 1, several illustrations depict possible futures wherein flyers would sit in alternating rows on upper and lower levels. The document presents the idea as a way to make better use of unused "upper lobe" space in wide-bodied models such as the A380.

The economic benefits to airlines are obvious. The proposed seating configurations would allow airlines to fit more people into a plane than they do currently. And with what it calls mezzanine seating, more passengers could recline to a flat-lying position, a setup the patent application suggests would be "suitable" for use in business class sections.

But flyers may not be ready for these controversial ideas. Both aviation commentators and the flying public panned the idea of near-standing "saddle" seating, an idea revealed one of the company's hundreds of patent filings in 2014.
