Researchers have discovered that one form of pitcher plant uses the energy of rainfall to catch its prey.

Researchers have discovered that one form of pitcher plant captures its prey—and readies itself for the next meal—much faster than others by harnessing the energy of rainfall. 
The pitcher plant in question, Nepenthes gracilis, has a rigid lid covering its trap—the rigidity effectively turning the lid into an upside down springboard. 

Rain drops strike the top of the lid and the rain energy ripples and knocks unsuspecting insects into the plant's trap. 


Once in the trap, the insects drown in the plant's fluids and are consumed.
