Life ring, debris found near last known location of missing cargo ship El Faro

CROOKED ISLAND, BAHAMAS-- The search continues for missing cargo ship 'El Faro' that lost communication on October 1 following its departure from Jacksonville on September 29.
The cargo ship 'El Faro' departed from Jacksonville with 28 American nationals and five Polish nationals on board during Hurricane Joaquin on Tuesday. The ship was en route to Puerto Rico with supplies when it lost communication on Thursday near the Crooked Islands in the Bahamas, the United States Coast Guard said.
According to officials, the ship had lost propulsion, was taking in water and was listing at 15 degrees. However, the crew reportedly was "pumping" the ship "successfully".
On Saturday night, a helicopter located a life ring from the ship about 120 nautical miles northeast of Crooked Island. Several other items that may belong to the ship found over a 225-square-mile debris field includes containers, styrofoam, loose deck materials and oil sheen, officials told WMTW News 8.
"At this time there has been no sighting of the El Faro or any lifeboats. TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico and the Coast Guard remain focused on the continuing search for the crew. The contracted tugs as well as other vessels transiting the area are also keeping a lookout for any sign of the ship. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the 33 individuals aboard the ship and their families. They are our number one priority," Tim Nolan, the president of TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico, said Sunday.
According to the United States Coast Guards, two HC-130 Hercules airplanes, a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and three Coast Guard cutters were taking part in the search. Sea and weather conditions during Sunday's search include 1-foot seas and 15-knot winds with unrestricted visibility.
