Teen bitten while surfing responds by punching the shark in the nose

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FLORIDA ? A Florida teenager escaped serious injury and possible death after punching a shark that had bitten him, according to a Fox 35 Orlando report.

The incident happened as the unidentified 14-year-old was reportedly paddling out on his surfboard in New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County early Sunday morning.

As he was making his way out in order to catch some waves with a group of friends at around 8:45 a.m., the boy was bitten on his left hand. The culprit? A blacktip shark, reportedly 4-5 feet in length.

Apparently undeterred by the cuts to his hand, the teen punched the shark in the nose and got away. Once he safely got back to the beach, he flagged down authorities who helped treat his injuries.

The boy was then taken to a hospital in nearby Daytona Beach and was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The teen is reportedly the second 14-year-old in as many weeks to have been bitten by a shark along New Smyrna Beach.
