Mummies More Common In Bronze Age Britain Than Previously Believed

A new study has found that mummification was practiced more often than previously thought in the UK during the Bronze Age. Though they often look like regular skeletons, an examination of bones found that nearly half had less degradation from bacteria which indicates a preservation method was used.

The idea of a mummy may conjure images of ancient Egypt, but recent research has found that the process was also practiced more often than previously thought in the UK during the Bronze Age. 


The new study describes that, instead of a tightly wrapped corpse, bodies were preserved in a number of ways such as by smoke or swaddling or even putting them in a bog where natural materials could act as protection.
