Spanish and Catalan papers report on the Catalan regional elections where pro-indepedence parties won an absolute majority, further fuelling calls for a referendum on secession. Pro-Madrid factions say however that the Catalan nationalists lost the 'plebiscite' because they got only 48% of the vote.
In New York, Russia wrongfoots the West on Syria ahead of the UN General Assembly but the positions of both Moscow and Washington are getting closer to one another.
