Created Millions Of Years Ago, Turkey’s Fairy Chimneys Seem Otherworldly

The chimneys that rise up in the Turkish area of Cappadocia were formed millions of years ago by volcanic ash but were eventually turned into churches, homes, and now hotels by civilizations across history.

The fairy chimneys of Cappadocia in Turkey may seem otherworldly, but they are in part the result of humans adapting the natural formations for their own purposes.

The mushroom-like peaks are thought to have been created millions of years ago from volcanic ash which eventually hardened into porous rock pillars that rise as high as 130 feet in the air.

The area was located on the Silk Road and was thus commandeered by various empires including the Persians, Romans, and the Ottomans.
