A tsunami is a series of waves that are produced by a sudden movement of the seabed: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, underwater landslides or even an asteroid. But frequently they are set off by earthquakes occurring at a depth of less than 50 metres, measuring at least 6.5 in magnitude. At a magnitude of 8, a tsunami can be devastating. VIDEOGRAPHIC
