National Zoo's Baby Panda Gets A Checkup

Veterinarians at the Smithsonian's National Zoo recently gave their baby panda a checkup.

Ever since the birth of her cub, giant panda Mei Xiang has been a doting mother, rarely leaving her baby’s side at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. 

As the young one gets stronger, however, she has been taking slightly longer food and beverage breaks.

Veterinarians recently took advantage of her time away and gave the little one a checkup. 

In the past week, the cub has gained a little over 4 ounces, an amount well within the normal range for a panda of his age. 

His lungs and heart were also checked and found to be functioning as they should.
