Two Turkish policemen killed in clashes with PKK

Two policemen were killed and three injured on Sunday (Sept. 6) during clashes with Kurdish separatists in the eastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir, according to media reports.

Fighters from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) reportedly fired a rocket-propelled grenade at police trying to raid their positions. Turkish police, backed by helicopters, exchanged fire with the separatists, and residents were ordered to stay indoors until further notice.

Deadly clashes have surged across eastern Turkey since July, when a two-year ceasefire between the PKK and the government collapsed, with both sides blaming the other.
