Peru: Protests Slam Increased U.S. Military Presence

Renewed protests were held in Lima against the increased U.S. military presence in Peru, approved in February by the country's congress. Demonstrators charged that the presence of U.S. troops violates the country's sovereignty and can be used to intervene against progressive governments in Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela. Political leaders and analysts expressed concern that with the expulsion of U.S. military forces from Ecuador, their presence in Peru could be part of a permanent and strategic policy.
