Guatemala: Rios Montt’s Genocide Trial Suspended
  • 9 years ago
A decision on dictator Efrain Rios Montt’s fitness to stand trial has been postponed until next Tuesday. The court should have made a decision this Tuesday after Rios Montt’s lawyers presented a medical report saying he suffered from dementia. In six hours of testimony, doctors confirmed the dementia but declined to say whether or not he was fit to stand trial. Rios Montt was found guilty of genocide in May 2013, but the verdict was thrown out on a legal technicality. Human rights groups have criticized the repeated delays in holding a retrial, stressing that thousands of victims deserve justice. teleSUR
