Comango and UPR: The human rights struggle continues
  • 9 years ago
On March 20, representatives from two opposing groups travelled to Geneva for the Universal Periodic Review sitting where Malaysia would make its response to recommendations by council members made at the October 24, 2013 session.

The opposing groups were Comango, a coalition of 54 NGOs and right-wing Muslim group under the banner of MuslimUPRo.

The Muslim groups have been antagonistic towards Comango and have made veiled threats at the coalition.

Even the government had labeled it illegal only to exclude this from subsequent mentions.

The next UPR is in 2018 with a mid-term review in 2016. For Comango this means monitoring the government's undertaking in the 'outcome document' to the UPR council. But more seriously it has to deal with the Muslim NGOs whose threats to the human rights coalition has to be taken seriously because of their access to media and the 'higher-ups'.

We speak with Jerald Joseph who was with the Comango team at the UPR.
