Mexico: Cuts in Rural Subsidies Hurt Small Producers

Busloads of farm workers arrived in Mexico City from throughout the country, to march in the capital city against cuts in agricultural spending that they say will damage small-scale producers rather than big agro-industry. These farmers from all over the country say that privatization policies and budget cuts are squeezing them out of the country’s profile. If they price of fertilizer and seeds is increasing, how will the agricultural sector survive? they ask. Farm workers say the 2016 federal budget cuts much needed social programs for small producers, while credit programs for large-scale producers in the agro-industry remain in effect.
