Iraqi frustration boils over as heatwave prompts protests

Hundreds of Iraqis took the streets in the southeastern city of Amara on Tuesday to protest about the lack of power supply in the mid-summer heat.

Temperatures of over 50 degrees Celsius over the past few days have exacerbated the regular power outages.

The rally is the latest in a series of protests across the country in recent weeks, prompted by people’s frustration with the quality of government services.

The protests are an extra headache for the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, which is struggling with the offensive from Islamic State militants.
