Doctors in China were able to reattach and restore the use of a man’s severed hand, but doing so required a rather unique approach.

Doctors in China were able to reattach and restore the use of a man’s severed hand, but doing so required a rather unique approach. 
In order to keep the hand alive before reattachment surgery could be performed, it was grafted to his lower leg.
Initially, it was believed the appendage couldn't be saved, since the accident severely damaged the arm.
Specialists thought there was a chance the man could regain functionality in his hand if the nerves and tendons in his arm had time to heal.
