Eurostar hits record passenger figures defying disruption caused by strikes in Calais

A record passenger high for Eurostar. The Channel Tunnel operator carried 2.8 million passengers from April to June, with more business travellers and a boost from its new service to the Mediterannean helping to lift sales.
The figures defied disruption caused by striking workers from MyFerryLink angry at the sale of the company to rival firm DFDS. Services were again interrupted by action on Tuesday. Last month protesters burnt tyres on the train tracks suspending services.
The company’s second quarter sales rose by 1.5 percent to around 240 million euros and passenger numbers, the highest in any three month period were up three percent.
The strength of sterling against the euro was also a reason for the boost in sales said Eurostar.
Trading in the first half of the year had been affected by terrorist attacks in Paris and a lorry fire which closed the tunnel.
