This weekend, sees the Finalé of the 2015 Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series at Sandy Park, in Exeter and there is a massive amount to play for. The first two legs in Moscow and Lyon produced some outstanding Sevens in two highly competitive Tournaments. All to play for in a Massive weekend for European Sevens European Champions and Olympic Qualifiers to be crowned this weekend in Exeter
France, outstanding throughout are in pole position to retain their status as European Champions having collected a maximum 40 points with wins in Moscow and Lyon. A dogged and skilful Spanish side lie second in the Series table with 34 points and represent the only realistic challenge to France’s title aspirations.
The reigning Champions however, will not have it all their own way, with some tough encounters to face in the pool phase. Day 1 sees France take on Germany and Portugal, both of whom can beat anyone on their day, and their third opponents Romania will be looking to restore some pride after two disappointing 12th placed finishes in the first two rounds
Second seed Spain arguably have a tougher Day 1 with matches against Lithuania, a resurgent Italy and hosts England who, having secured Great Britain’s place in Rio will be itching to win their home Tournament and give the thousands of expected spectators, plenty to cheer about. The Spaniards however, have been outstanding this season and will no doubt be looking to reach the Final and hope that results go their way to allow them to pick up a first Rugby Europe Sevens GPS title.
Rio Beckons!
As if being crowned European Champions isn’t enough, the Winner of the Series will achieve automatic Qualification to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Series Runner Up will head straight to World Rugby’s Global Repechage Tournament and continue their European qualification dream.
All eligible teams who finish in the Series in positions 3-12, will take part in the European Repechage Tournament in Lisbon on 18 / 19 July. They will be joined by Poland, Ukraine and Latvia who qualified through Division A and Division B winners Ireland. The top three teams from the Repchage Tournament will keep their qualification hopes alive and head to the World Rugby Global Repechage Tournament next year.
