Photoshop Carved Text Effect, how to carve text into a surface, CS5 CS6 CC Tutorial

How to use Photoshop to create a carved text look on any surface. This video shows you the different tools and techniques available to give text that carved text look. This comprehensive video takes you step-by-step through the complete process from beginning images clear through to the final composite image. After the project video I answer some common questions about the techniques I used in this video. This training demo was recorded in Photoshop CS6 but the techniques used will work just as well in Photoshop CS5 through the latest Photoshop CC.
Creating carved text is pretty straight forward and follows a few simple Photoshop steps.
1. You need a plain background, in this training I use both a picture of granite and I demonstrate how to create a wood texture from scratch.
2. Pick a typeface to match the surface and style. A thinner typeface works better for hard surfaces like Granite, and a thicker typeface looks better on a softer surface like wood.
3. Use the Bevel and Emboss Photoshop Layer Styles to create the edges and lighting for the carved look. Different specific settings work best for thin and thick letters.
4. For added realism use Photoshop Blending Modes to help blend the type into the surface.
