Ecuador: Correa Withdraws Controversial Bills Until After Pope's Visit

In a move to stifle opposition violence and destabilization Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa temporarily withdrew two important tax bills from debate in Congress. The bills are an inheritance tax on the richest two percent of the population and a capital gains tax to deter land speculation. Opposition groups had engaged in violent protests over the law. Correa said he decided to postpone the congressional debate until after Pope Francis’s visit to the country in July. What is needed, said the President, is a broader debate about the kind of country we want. teleSUR
