9/11 Ten Years Later

  • há 9 anos
Much has happened in the decade since the suicide attacks of September 11, 2001, killed nearly 3,000 people on the eastern coast of the United States. America and Britain have fought wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. London and Madrid have also been the victims of murderous attacks. Security measures have been implemented that have permanently affected the climate and culture of the Western world.

The 10th anniversary of those terrible events has stirred up the ancient debate as to whether the response to the 9/11 attacks was effective in diminishing terrorism, or merely made the situation worse. The short answer is that some elements were effective, and others were not. But as ministers reflect today on the best way to protect Britain from terrorists who claim to be inspired by Islam, the starting point of their deliberations must be recognition of the fact that the threat of attack from such terrorists is as real, and as lethal, as ever.
