A man has been killed by a swordfish after he jumped from a Hawaii pier to try to catch it.
The victim – named by Hawaii County police as 47-year-old Randy Llanes of Kailua-Kona – was apparently impaled by the bill of the fish.
West Hawaii Acting Battalion Chief John Whitman says witnesses reported that the man leapt from a Kailua-Kona pier yesterday Friday in an attempt to catch a billfish.
He was later seen floating and firefighters responded to the scene. Mr Whitman said he had a puncture wound to his right, upper torso, and was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says the fish was a swordfish about 3ft long with a bill about 3ft. It weighed about 40lbs.
