Jury sentences Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death

A US jury has sentenced Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death.

The jury chose death by lethal injection over life in prison for the 21-year-old, for his role in the 2013 attack which killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

The sentencing decision came after 15 hours of deliberations.

Tsarnaev, an ethnic Chechen, was found guilty of placing a pair of homemade pressure cooker bombs at the race’s crowded finish line as well as fatally shooting a police officer.

The bombing was one of he highest profile attacks on US soil since the 11 September 2011 attacks.

Prosecutors described Tsarnaev as an adherent of al Qaeda’s militant Islamist views, who carried out the attack as an act of retribution for the US military campaigns in Muslim-dominated countries.
