Five people were killed and dozens more injured in Thailand on Sunday when a suspension bridge collapsed in the city of Ayutthaya, around 75km north of the capital Bangkok. The 120m long bridge, which is open to motorcycles, bicycles and foot traffic, collapsed at around 6pm, causing dozens of people to fall around 20m into the Pa Sak River.
Many of the victims were crushed by the bridge's concrete slabs. The dead included two males and three females. Forty-five people were taken to a local hospital with two said to be in critical condition local newspapers said. The death toll could rise further as rescuers searched the river for more victims.
According to reports the bridge was repaired last year at a cost of 8 million baht following severe flooding in 2011.
