At least 21 people are missing and feared dead after a dangerously overloaded boat capsized in a remote Malaysian river on Tuesday.

Reports differ on the precise number, but more than 100 passengers boarded an 74-seat express ferry at Belaga in Borneo at 8 a.m. An hour into the 3-hour journey to Kapit, the boat struck a rock causing it to capsize, trapping cabin passengers. Many of the passengers, mainly timber camp workers, were able to swim to shore. The vessel sank killing an as yet unknown number of people.
