Six people were killed and up to twenty people injured in a suicide bombing at a Shi'ite mosque in Baghdad on July 30. According to Reuters, a group of Shi'ite pilgrims were attending a memorial gathering at Assad Allah al-Ghalib mosque when a suicide bomber entered.

The Sheikh of the mosque reportedly threw his arms around the suicide bomber in an attempt to prevent further deaths. It was reported that militant groups including al Qaeda have increased attacks in recent months in an insurgency against the Shi'ite-led government as a civil war in neighboring Syria heightens sectarian tensions.
