Skyscraper 'death ray' melts car with building glare in London

Car melting: A UK man's Jaguar XJ was damaged after light reflected off a London skyscraper dubbed the "Walkie Talkie" melted the panels and rear view mirror on the car. The building, which is under construction at 20 Fenchurch Street, reportedly reflects blinding rays of light into the street, which also apparently damages cars by concentrating a lot of heat into one area.

Martin Lindsay said he had parked his car in the street for about two hours, and returned to find that the wing mirror and badge had melted.

You can't believe something like this would happen," Lindsay said. "They've got to do something about it. "It could be dangerous. Imagine if the sun reflected on the wrong part of the body."

Construction workers seem to be aware that this has been happening, and had left Lindsay a note on the windscreen of the car asking him to give them a call. Joint developers Land Securities and Canary Wharf have also apologized and agreed to help pay the ₤946 in repair costs.

As a precaution, London authorities are also suspending three parking bays in the area which may be affected by the intense beam of light.

The building, designed by architect Rafael Vinoly, is a 525 ft-tall, 27-storey skyscraper that is set to be completed next year.
