Child leg amputation: 11 year old girl needs surgery to survive, family too poor - TomoNews

Fengyu is an 11 year old girl, who lives in poverty in Shanxi, China. Several months ago Fengyu tripped and fell, scraping and bruising her left leg. Her family didn’t think much of it, after all, kids are always running around and getting minor scrapes and bruises.

But a few months later Fengyu’s lower leg had blackened and visibly begun to rot away from the bruised areas. In some places the decay was so bad the bone was visible.

Her father finally took her to a doctor who said that Fengyu had suffered an acute arterial embolism in her leg, which is a blood clot that cut off the blood flow to her lower leg. At the clinic Fengyu was also diagnosed with a congenital heart condition, which makes surgery risky for her.

Doctors said that the only way to save Fengyu’s life was to amputate the limb before she got blood poisoning.

But the surgery would cost USD $32,000 and her father works as a janitor to support a family of five. Even if they borrowed money, Fengyu’s father wouldn’t be able to get enough to afford his daughter’s surgery.

So Fengyu’s father took her home.
