At least 19 people died and 44 were injured in a multiple vehicle collision in the Philippines on Saturday early morning.

According to reports, the accident occurred in Quezon province, 115 kilometers southeast of Manila, on the diversion road at the boundary of Barangay Sta. Catalina and Malinao Ilaya in Atimonan town.

A Super Lines bus heading for Bicol was carrying 49 passengers. According to reports, it was raining hard at the time of the accident.

According to the bus driver, a vehicle bumped him from behind. He lost control of the bus and hit two cargo trucks, two buses, a trailer truck and a wing van coming from the opposite direction before finally coming to a stop.

Most of the fatalities died on the spot as they were crushed inside the wreckage of the vehicles after the collision.

Henry Buzar, coordinator of Quezon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said he immediately dispatched a team of rescuers at the accident site, the Inquirer reported.

"My staffs were having a hard time retrieving some of the wounded. Some of them were also pinned down inside the wreckage," he said.

According to ABS-CBN News, the injured were brought to the Emil-Joanna General Hospital, Doña Marta Memorial District Hospital and Gumaca District Hospital.

The driver of the Super Line bus, Albert Nava, is now detained at the town jail.
